Rules for wearing cologne

Day 183 – So, I did something debatable today. I say debatable, because since college I’ve maintained the view that cologne generally takes a stinky person and puts them onto the level of a Jersey Shore cast-member.

Cologne is sometimes the bedrock for trying too hard. I have always thought that a good aftershave, and soap, makes a man smell the way he should. I’ve actually read a few articles in Esquire that support the idea that cologne is a reflection of you. Obviously, when you walk into a room and all you can smell is someone’s cologne, they’re probably also the person trying way too hard to be noticed.

Take Pinterest back from the ladies

Day 164 – Have ever surfed the web, come across something badass that you want to remember, but had nowhere to store it? The solution used to be bookmarks, but no one ever goes back to those things. Pinterest is the solution.

Pinterest is a new website and app that I’ve been enjoying lately. And by “lately,” I mean every single day. In fact, its one of the first websites/apps I use every day because it helps me get dressed in the morning.

Customer Service: Forgive and Forget? Or Get What You Paid For?

Day 157 – I always like trying out new joints when on the road. The more obscure, the better. After a long day of work, there’s really nothing better than exploring new spots, rockin’ out, and sharing a few laughs with friends.

Except if untrained staff ruins your jacket, and then poor management ignores your humble requests for compensation.

Should guys go to a “stylist?”

Day 116 – Today I learned that I’m supposed to only wash my hair twice a week. Ok, this one is new to me and I just don’t know how I feel about it.

As a man, I should be going to a barber shop and not a stylist, but today I had to make an exception. Before I get into this, you should know that my father was a barber and my mother was a cosmetologist. That means I got my hair cut all the time.

How many shoes is too many for a man to own?

Day 84 – Is too many? Are too many? Whatever…

Well, see that picture above? That’s too many.

I think its safe to say that a man should not have more shoes than his wife has. I’m cutting it close.

But while you shouldn’t have as many as your wife has, you should also have more than just one. No Rob, wearing sneakers with a suit is not acceptable. You have to cut that out.

The Appropriate Pant Length

Day 81 – Some days a man just has to look himself in the mirror and say “I look like an idiot.” It could be a haircut or a beard or even a beer gut. Hell, it could be just about anything.

Today, I had that experience after Elizabeth told me that I wear my pants too short. Seriously. We’ve been married nearly seven years, and she is just now telling me that my pants are too short.

A Gentleman Carries a Handkerchief

Day 56 – It’s that time of year. The weather is changing. The sniffling is beginning. And once again, guys are wiping their snot all over their own hands, arms and sleeves.

This isn’t rocket science.

We shake hands with other men all day long. Do you want their snot all over your hand?

Figuring Out What To Wear To A Wedding

Day 28 – Last night I got a text from a buddy asking, “Is it acceptable to wear seersucker to a 6:00 wedding?”

I told him yes. That’s because I wanted him to look like an idiot. For the rest of you, the answer is no. Don’t do it. It’s not right.

Seersucker is a material that is meant to be worn on hot, summer days. A 6:00 wedding is considered a formal wedding and gentlemen should wear a dark suit or a tux.

There would be some occasions that I would say that a seersucker suit is appropriate, and these are limited to daytime beach and outdoor weddings. These are really the only times that a seersucker suit would be appropriate. Even then if the wedding is outdoors, a suit or at least a blazer and slacks would be more appropriate if it is at 6:00.

Almost Time To Say Goodbye To Seersucker

Day 24 – It’s nearly the end of summer and man has it been a busy one. Campaign season is heating up we are busier than ever. That’s a good thing.

Along with the seasons changing, it is also in between two of my favorite unofficial seasons – seersucker season and football season.

Last week, we had the voice of the Gamecocks, Todd Ellis, on Pub Politics, the Gamecocks were listed in the top 12 of the preseason polls, and Alshon Jeffery was shown on the cover of Sports Illustrated. With all this hype and the promise of a great season, I am pumped about football starting in a week.

The Lost Art of Handwritten Notes

Day 16 - This weekend I received a handwritten thank you note from Florence County GOP activist Bill Pickle. Occasionally I’ll get a note in the mail from SC Senator Greg Gregory advising me to check out a bowtie or a shoe company. We get a lot of notes from ladies, but I have found that this is a dying art among gentlemen.

I’ve had a box of stationary for years, but I always fail to do the right thing and write notes. That will change this year. With me owning an Internet company, emails, Facebook messages and tweets are what I have become accustomed to and expect. Whenever I receive a handwritten notes, it is refreshing and shows that the sender really cares.
