You Will Be Supplied What You Demand

Day 29 – In continuing our study of the Beatitudes this weekend, Dr. Wendell Estep of First Baptist Church of Columbia moved on to Matthew 5:6, which states “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”

Dr. Estep said that we have three types of thirsts. The first is the physical thirst. As you know, I certainly have a large appetite for tacos, boiled peanuts and barbecue. The second is the intellectual thirst. The third is spiritual thirst.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions as to why I talk about faith so much on this blog. It’s an easy answer. I believe that to be a better person you must thirst for spiritual growth. That is not to say that I think religious people are better people than atheists. I don’t think they’re better. I just think they’re are better off.

Get Off Your Couch

Day 26 – “This is where the first shot hit. This was the second shot. This was the kill shot.” Today I had the pleasure of getting a quick tour of the JFK assassination zone in Dallas from a Kennedy buff. Don’t worry. This isn’t going to turn into a conspiracy theory blog.

I talk a lot about travel here. It’s become one of my passions. Everywhere I go I always get that “I cannot believe I’m standing here” feeling. You know what I mean. I can’t believe I’m standing where the twin towers fell. I can’t believe I’m at the Eiffel Tower. I can’t believe I’m at the Coliseum. I can’t believe I’m watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Next month it will be I can’t believe I’m standing on the Great Wall of China.

Cooking Something I Killed

Day 22 – Three months ago some of my best buddies took me on my first hunting expedition. We packed up a couple SUVs and drove south to Florida where we the five of us each killed a wild boar.  We’ve been eating on the pigs for weeks and finally it was time for me to cook up a ham on my own.

I say that it was on my own, but Matt Nichols gave me some good direction and I must say, it turned out pretty amazing.

The Pub Politics Hangover

Day 18 - If you recall, one of my resolutions was to drink less beer and in the cases when I do drink beer, make sure it is high quality. Last night at Pub Politics, I held true to this promise. Instead of drinking Bud Light at Tin Roof, I opted for Magic Hat #9.

I even drank less than I would have before I made this resolution. Less beer plus better beer should equal feeling just fine in the morning. However, this morning I woke up with a massive headache.

The culprit? I blame draft beer. And I don’t seem to be the only one.

Best Burgers and Beer in Charleston

Day 7- Part 1 - South Carolina has always been known for its culinary specialties. Fresh seafood, southern style vegetables, barbeque and fried everything make our state a must visit spot for any food lover. Now we see a second generation of food artists popping up around our state and many are taking traditional foods in a new direction. We’re seeing gourmet hamburger and hot dog joints popping up in every corner of the state.

Nowhere is South Carolina’s food more known that in downtown Charleston, but I may have found the lowcountry’s best burger outside of the Holy City to its north in the revitalized Park Circle area of North Charleston.

How You Can Lose 13 Pounds in Just 3 Weeks

DAY 6 - WOW! That title sounds like some cheesy health magazine cover. I mean, seriously, can’t those guys get anymore creative than the crap they throw on every single cover? How many times are they going to tell us that we can get rock solid abs in 30 days?

Actually, I did just lose 13 pounds in three weeks dropping from 170 to 157 pounds. Here’s how it happened:

Find an Accountability Buddy who Makes You Reach Your Goals

DAY 3 – Please do not think I’m one of those “social media gurus” trying to sell you on lifestyle design. Unless you are running for office or promoting a cause, I don’t want your money. I tweet and FourSquare my life, but I’m not one to share the more intimate parts of my life.

So why am I doing this?

People need accountability. I need you to hold me accountable. I want to help hold you accountable.

Holy Crap! I Gained Five Pounds This Weekend.

On Friday I weighed 159 pounds, my lowest in years. This morning I was back up to 164. What happened?

Luckily, I’m not freaking out. I expected it. Not only have I been hitting the gym harder than I ever have, I have also been sticking to an extremely strict diet over the last two weeks. Inspired by Timothy Ferriss, I have been trying out his “Slow Carb Diet” from The 4-Hour Body, which can be broken down into five rules:

Christianity and my Vodka Tonic

Today I continued my study of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. I am not just reading, but taking the time to research, pray and reflect.  Today I began book three and studied the 4 cardinal rules:

  1. Prudence: sound judgment
  2. Justice: moral rightness
  3. Temperance: moderation ion action, thought or feeling
  4. Fortitude: ability to control fear, pain, danger, uncertainty and intimidation
