Day 84 – Is too many? Are too many? Whatever…
Well, see that picture above? That’s too many.
I think its safe to say that a man should not have more shoes than his wife has. I’m cutting it close.
But while you shouldn’t have as many as your wife has, you should also have more than just one. No Rob, wearing sneakers with a suit is not acceptable. You have to cut that out.
Here are the shoes that every single man should own.
The sneaker
I’m not talking about your athletic shoe here, although it can be an athletic shoe. Every man should have a pair of sneakers that he can throw on with a pair of jeans that isn’t covered in mud or sweat. These aren’t your workout or your lawn shoes. These should be clean sneakers that don’t smell like crap.
The athletic shoe
This is your athletic shoe, which is usually a sneaker, that you workout in. I workout in five-finger vibrams (more on that in the near future). Every man should be getting exercise, so this is a must-have.
The brown dress shoe
For your khaki, brown and blue suits. It’s even becoming trending to throw on brown dress shoes with black and grey suits.
The black dress shoe
You can’t get through life without a pair of black dress shoes. Professional work, weddings and funerals all require them.
The casual shoe
You can’t wear sneakers all the time. You need a pair of nice casual shoes to chill in.
The hobby shoe
Fishing, hunting, golfing, rock climbing, boxing, biking, running and all sorts of other hobbies have special shoes. I just ordered these sweet “bean boots” from LL Bean because I promised Phil, Michael and Matt that I would get into hunting with them.
Now, for you southern men, there are a few more shoes you must have in your closet.
The Rainbows
You can’t get through summer without them.
The white buck
Please don’t wear a seersucker suit with any other shoe.
The boat shoe
This is just a staple for any southerner.
My personal favorite…
The Toms
So these aren’t must-own shoes, but I want to throw out this suggestion. Buy them. Sure, they might look like bedroom slippers, but they are AMAZING! These are the shoes I now wear more than any other shoes, thus the reason for them being so worn out. I’ve also found them to be the best travel shoe.

PS – As you can see, some of my shoes are scuffed up pretty good. It’s time for some good shoe shining. I’ll put up a post in the next few days about how to shine your own shoes.
