Smile More and Make New Friends

Day 11 – Last night we shot Pub Politics Episode 69 from the Free Times Best Of Party and I have to say, it was definitely one of my top five favorite episodes. With Phil out of town, Tyler Jones stepped in from the left. Former SC Rep and President Obama appointee Anton Gun was our host. The show went as normal, talking about the current issues and then took a deep dive as we discussed party affiliation v faith the conflicts that often arise. I can’t wait for you to see this one.

Man, those girls and Flock and Rally know how to throw a party. If you’re looking to throw a southern conservative party, turn to my wife Elizabeth Donehue. If you’re looking to host an all out, might I say “liberal”, throw down, call the Flock and Rally team. Everything from their invitations to their decorations are mind blowing. Themed drinks, such as last night’s vodka snow cones, and amazing food are staples of their Columbia parties.

Socks or No Socks?

DAY 10 - Three years ago the SC Senate Sergeant of Arms kicked me out of the Senate chamber claiming that I was not dressed properly. His reason? I wasn’t wearing socks.  While not smiling often, he has a great sense of humor, so to this day I do not know if he was joking.  I like to think he was because I really hate wearing socks.

When it comes to getting dressed in the morning, socks are usually one of the last things that we men think about. To make matters worse, who wants to wear socks when it is stinkin’ 105 degrees outside during the summer? Not me. Socks or the lack thereof are a crucial part of any man’s wardrobe, so here are my findings and thoughts.

Do Not Be The Stinky Guy at the Gym

Day 9 – I recently hit the store to buy a bunch of extra gym clothes. Elizabeth doesn’t like when I wash the clothes every night, so I decided to buy enough gym clothes to have clean shorts, shirts, underclothes and wraps for five days a week. Yes, that’s a lot of gym clothes, but you only have two choices – wash your clothes or have enough clean ones for every day. Wearing the same clothes two days is absolutely not an option. The gym makes you sweat. Sweat makes you stink. And you cannot be the stinky guy at the gym.

Here are a few gym etiquette rules from John Bridges’ How To Be a Gentleman:

Oh Happy Day!

Day 8 - Yesterday I finished reading Grethen Rubin’s The Happiness Project on the same day Pastor Wendell Estep of Columbia’s First Baptist Church began a study of The Sermon on the Mount, beginning with the Beatitudes and a discussion on happiness. I found it amazing that God put this sermon in front of me as I began this one –year project concentrating on happiness.

As Dr. Estep explained, “The Sermon on the Mount, found in the Book of Matthew, is the Christian Constitution. The Beatitudes are the preamble. Together they tell us what is expected of us as Christians.”

Get Your Man a Tattoo for His Birthday

Day 7 – Part 2 – Saturday was just too busy to put into one post. Now its time for you to meet Katie, Mimi and Daddy Bill’s westie.

Yesterday I was tasked with taking Katie to the vet and today I got stuck with giving her a flea bath. She’s staying with us for the rest of the week and there is a chance she becomes the newest member of the Donehue clan. We’ll see how that goes.

Best Burgers and Beer in Charleston

Day 7- Part 1 - South Carolina has always been known for its culinary specialties. Fresh seafood, southern style vegetables, barbeque and fried everything make our state a must visit spot for any food lover. Now we see a second generation of food artists popping up around our state and many are taking traditional foods in a new direction. We’re seeing gourmet hamburger and hot dog joints popping up in every corner of the state.

Nowhere is South Carolina’s food more known that in downtown Charleston, but I may have found the lowcountry’s best burger outside of the Holy City to its north in the revitalized Park Circle area of North Charleston.

How You Can Lose 13 Pounds in Just 3 Weeks

DAY 6 - WOW! That title sounds like some cheesy health magazine cover. I mean, seriously, can’t those guys get anymore creative than the crap they throw on every single cover? How many times are they going to tell us that we can get rock solid abs in 30 days?

Actually, I did just lose 13 pounds in three weeks dropping from 170 to 157 pounds. Here’s how it happened:

A Life Well Lived

Day 5 – How do you want people to remember you?

Do you want to be known as some selfish jerk that curses too much, drinks too much, loses his temper and never lifts a finger for other people? Or do you want to be known as a good man, humble, giving and warm-hearted?

I’ll take the latter, thank you. I prefer to hear God’s voice say “well done good and faithful servant.” If people genuinely say, “he was a good man” at my funeral, I will have had a life well lived.

Don’t EFF with me B**CH

This morning I pulled up to a red light while finally enjoying a cooler morning with the windows down and the sunroof open. I heard the bass thumping as a new Honda Accord pulled up next to me. The African American lady had her windows down also and the rap music flowed from her car to all neighboring vehicles.

Now, I love rap music, especially old school Death Row records, Bone Thugs and Wu Tang. Can we all agree that today’s rap sucks compared to old school rap? Ok, moving on…

This particular song was by a female rap artist who kept repeating “don’t f**k with me b**ch.” I sat there for 20 seconds and I had to have heard that line 15 times. Here’s my question for you – what kind of mentality would you be in this morning if on the way to work, you heard “don’t f**k with me b**ch” over and over again?

Decide What To Be and Go Be It

DAY 4 – It’s Day 4 and today I’m finally launching Man Project. This is something new to me and I’m quite nervous sharing all this personal information. I just hope I can inspire you to do a little more with your life as I attempt to do a little more with mine.

William Butler Yeats wrote, “Happiness is neither virtue nor pleasure nor this thing nor that, but simply growth. We are happy when we are growing.”

I find that statement to be very true in my life. I find happiness when I’m growing my business, my marriage, my faith, my intellect, my abilities, my body and my relationships with other people. Over the next year I am going to concentrate on growth and log my progress and the tricks I learn on this blog.
