Figuring Out What To Wear To A Wedding

Day 28 – Last night I got a text from a buddy asking, “Is it acceptable to wear seersucker to a 6:00 wedding?”

I told him yes. That’s because I wanted him to look like an idiot. For the rest of you, the answer is no. Don’t do it. It’s not right.

Seersucker is a material that is meant to be worn on hot, summer days. A 6:00 wedding is considered a formal wedding and gentlemen should wear a dark suit or a tux.

There would be some occasions that I would say that a seersucker suit is appropriate, and these are limited to daytime beach and outdoor weddings. These are really the only times that a seersucker suit would be appropriate. Even then if the wedding is outdoors, a suit or at least a blazer and slacks would be more appropriate if it is at 6:00.

The best tip I can give my fellow men is to look at the invitation to help you decide what is appropriate to wear to a particular wedding.

The invitation is one of the first indicators that can tell you what level of formality is going to be required. If the invitation is overly elegant and formal, no way would a seersucker suit be appropriate. These are weddings where you should always wear a dark suit or tux. If the invitation has anything like, getting hitched, tying the knot, etc., there is more room for your favorite summer suits.

When in doubt, overdress. Oscar Wilde wrote, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Better safe than sorry.

Oh, and Richie…I didn’t want you to look like an idiot. I was just wrong. I hope no one laughed at you. And I hope that one day you will find it in your heart to forgive me.
