DAY 10 - Three years ago the SC Senate Sergeant of Arms kicked me out of the Senate chamber claiming that I was not dressed properly. His reason? I wasn’t wearing socks. While not smiling often, he has a great sense of humor, so to this day I do not know if he was joking. I like to think he was because I really hate wearing socks.
When it comes to getting dressed in the morning, socks are usually one of the last things that we men think about. To make matters worse, who wants to wear socks when it is stinkin’ 105 degrees outside during the summer? Not me. Socks or the lack thereof are a crucial part of any man’s wardrobe, so here are my findings and thoughts.
As a general rule of thumb, it is not necessary to wear socks after Memorial Day in casual situations. This rule applies for loafers, driving shoes, and the more obvious examples, but within reason. If you are going to be wearing jeans or khakis, its alright for you to ditch the socks. For us southern gentlemen, it is even okay not to wear socks to church.
When it comes to business situations, wearing socks is still the couth thing to do twelve months a year. Oxfords, wingtips, loafers, whatever. Men need to understand that if you are going to wear dress shoes, you need to have socks that match your pants. Or if you do not have any the match your pants, make sure that they at least match your shoes.
For the style aficionados, the current trend is to add colorful socks to match accessories and find sweet printed socks. I’m a big fan of the printed socks right now. Palmetto trees, skulls and crossbones, etc have all recently made it into my wardrobe.
This goes without saying, but what if there are no socks clean? Should we still wear the white ones? The answer is heck no! There is nothing that ruins the professional appearance of a man more than when he sits down and you see white socks. White socks do not match anything. White socks are sportswear, wear them as such.
