Gentlemen Don’t Need Curse Words

Day 31 – I made it to one month. That’s one full month, 31 days, of blogging. Sure, blogging every day has been tough, but it has been well worth it.

Tonight, we shot Pub Politics: Episode 72. Before the show, I noticed two children sitting in the corner of the bar with their parents. I told my co-host Phil and guests Alphonse, Ann and Will to watch their mouths. Then I thought to myself, really? Should we only be watching our mouths when children are present?

I immediately thought of these words by the Avett Brothers from “Tear Down The House”: [Read more...]

Be a Gentleman at Football Games

Day 30 – Gamecock Football starts this Saturday.

Are you ready?

We have waited, prayed that Garcia hasn’t been permanently kicked off the team and received renewed excitement at the hype of the incoming and returning players. I am actually letting myself believe that this could be the year.

As Coach Spurrier ask, “Why not us?”

This could be our year. We have talent and we have depth not seen on our team since, well, ever.

You Will Be Supplied What You Demand

Day 29 – In continuing our study of the Beatitudes this weekend, Dr. Wendell Estep of First Baptist Church of Columbia moved on to Matthew 5:6, which states “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.”

Dr. Estep said that we have three types of thirsts. The first is the physical thirst. As you know, I certainly have a large appetite for tacos, boiled peanuts and barbecue. The second is the intellectual thirst. The third is spiritual thirst.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions as to why I talk about faith so much on this blog. It’s an easy answer. I believe that to be a better person you must thirst for spiritual growth. That is not to say that I think religious people are better people than atheists. I don’t think they’re better. I just think they’re are better off.

Figuring Out What To Wear To A Wedding

Day 28 – Last night I got a text from a buddy asking, “Is it acceptable to wear seersucker to a 6:00 wedding?”

I told him yes. That’s because I wanted him to look like an idiot. For the rest of you, the answer is no. Don’t do it. It’s not right.

Seersucker is a material that is meant to be worn on hot, summer days. A 6:00 wedding is considered a formal wedding and gentlemen should wear a dark suit or a tux.

There would be some occasions that I would say that a seersucker suit is appropriate, and these are limited to daytime beach and outdoor weddings. These are really the only times that a seersucker suit would be appropriate. Even then if the wedding is outdoors, a suit or at least a blazer and slacks would be more appropriate if it is at 6:00.

Know Who Your Friends Are

Day 27 – Here I am back on an airplane. YAY airplanes! This time, I’m on the way back from Dallas where I had a few business meetings. More on that later.

I just listened to a sermon by Dr. Wendell Estep of First Baptist Church Columbia in which he said, “When my father died, it was a long time ago. I remember being there. I do not remember one song that was sung. And I do not remember what the preacher preached about. But I remember those people that were there.”

Get Off Your Couch

Day 26 – “This is where the first shot hit. This was the second shot. This was the kill shot.” Today I had the pleasure of getting a quick tour of the JFK assassination zone in Dallas from a Kennedy buff. Don’t worry. This isn’t going to turn into a conspiracy theory blog.

I talk a lot about travel here. It’s become one of my passions. Everywhere I go I always get that “I cannot believe I’m standing here” feeling. You know what I mean. I can’t believe I’m standing where the twin towers fell. I can’t believe I’m at the Eiffel Tower. I can’t believe I’m at the Coliseum. I can’t believe I’m watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Next month it will be I can’t believe I’m standing on the Great Wall of China.

Should I Run for City Council?

Day 25 – What a long day.  I got up at 3:30 am today to catch a flight to Texas.  That came on the heals of a long Pub Politics and an amazing dinner at Saluda’s in 5 Points. If you ever go to Saluda’s, get the pork chops. AMAZING!

Yesterday’s events came out of nowhere. On Tuesday night, I was complaining to my buddies about the situation in Columbia, joking about one day running for City Council. Less than twelve hours later, my City Councilwoman announces that she will not seek reelection.

It was a big topic on WACH Fox and during Pub Politics yesterday. Speaking of which, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out last night. It was an amazing crowd and I’m so pumped that we FINALLY got the sound working. It’s amazing what a few hundred dollars in microphones and cords can do for a set up. Everyone in the bar and online could hear. The recording sounds really good too.

Almost Time To Say Goodbye To Seersucker

Day 24 – It’s nearly the end of summer and man has it been a busy one. Campaign season is heating up we are busier than ever. That’s a good thing.

Along with the seasons changing, it is also in between two of my favorite unofficial seasons – seersucker season and football season.

Last week, we had the voice of the Gamecocks, Todd Ellis, on Pub Politics, the Gamecocks were listed in the top 12 of the preseason polls, and Alshon Jeffery was shown on the cover of Sports Illustrated. With all this hype and the promise of a great season, I am pumped about football starting in a week.

Someone Has To Stand Up

Day 23 – So an earthquake hit today. That’s interesting.

In other news, I’m just angry enough to run for City Council. I just got back from having cocktails with Matt Nichols, John Sturm and Phil Bailey, where I overhead the bartender talking about all the hoops he had to jump through to open up Henry’s on Devine Street. He also mentioned seeing a study ranking Columbia as the 19th most unfriendly business city in the nation.

Cooking Something I Killed

Day 22 – Three months ago some of my best buddies took me on my first hunting expedition. We packed up a couple SUVs and drove south to Florida where we the five of us each killed a wild boar.  We’ve been eating on the pigs for weeks and finally it was time for me to cook up a ham on my own.

I say that it was on my own, but Matt Nichols gave me some good direction and I must say, it turned out pretty amazing.

The Donehue Tribe

Day 21 – WOW! What a day. Thank you to everyone who has called, emailed, texted, Facebooked and tweeted about the article that ran today in The State and the Post and Courier. In particular, it was fun to hear from family members in Charleston who woke up to the front-page article. You guys are so awesome!

Know When to Fight

Day 20 – Kurt was right. Writing every day is pretty tough. We just got home from a long day in Hilton Head, where we said our final goodbyes to Daddy Bill. While the ceremony was sad, it was great to see good friends and my adorable goddaughter Audrey.

Taking Pub Politics To New Heights

Day 19 – Yesterday, my buddy, Kurt, stopped by the office (Hi Kurt!) to catch up. After telling him that I plan on blogging every single day, he replied, “Can you do that? That’s a big commitment.”

I mean, I plan to, but things are going to come up, and I’m sure I’ll miss a day or two every once in awhile. Right now, Elizabeth and I are on the way down to the final installment of Daddy Bill’s funeral. In case you didn’t know that a funeral can go two weeks, trust me, it can. Daddy Bill lived in Hilton Head the last 29 years, so we now head south for the final service where he will be honored by his friends. I type while Elizabeth drives her brand new BMW X5. Well, it’s not brand new, but it’s new to her. And if might I say, it looks real good on her.

The Pub Politics Hangover

Day 18 - If you recall, one of my resolutions was to drink less beer and in the cases when I do drink beer, make sure it is high quality. Last night at Pub Politics, I held true to this promise. Instead of drinking Bud Light at Tin Roof, I opted for Magic Hat #9.

I even drank less than I would have before I made this resolution. Less beer plus better beer should equal feeling just fine in the morning. However, this morning I woke up with a massive headache.

The culprit? I blame draft beer. And I don’t seem to be the only one.

The Other Side of Sports

DAY 17 - It has been an extremely busy week for us at Donehue Direct and I do not have a lot of time to write today. I’m posting now because I promised to post everyday. I have a really good post that I wrote yesterday on “The Lost Art of Hand Written Thank You Notes” but I haven’t even had time to post it. I’ll get it up at some point today.

One quick programming note – We will be shooting Pub Politics Episode 70 at 6:00 pm today from Tin Roof. This is our Back to School and USC Football episode. Our guest will be Todd Ellis (pictured above with Coach Spurier), voice of the Gamecocks. For those of you who have been to one of our episodes at Tin Roof, you know that the sound has been sucky. This time we will be using Tin Roof’s stage and sound system. It should be really good. I think you’ll dig it.

The Lost Art of Handwritten Notes

Day 16 - This weekend I received a handwritten thank you note from Florence County GOP activist Bill Pickle. Occasionally I’ll get a note in the mail from SC Senator Greg Gregory advising me to check out a bowtie or a shoe company. We get a lot of notes from ladies, but I have found that this is a dying art among gentlemen.

I’ve had a box of stationary for years, but I always fail to do the right thing and write notes. That will change this year. With me owning an Internet company, emails, Facebook messages and tweets are what I have become accustomed to and expect. Whenever I receive a handwritten notes, it is refreshing and shows that the sender really cares.

Why Travel?

Day 15 - I will not go as far as saying that travel makes you a “good man,” but I do believe it makes you a better man. It is important to grow in knowledge. We live in a big world and to understand ourselves, we must understand other people.

I never traveled in my youth. My parents just did not have the resources. When Elizabeth and I first married, I asked if we could hold off on kids for a few years so that I can see the world. In just a few short years, we have visited Mexico, Hawaii, France, Italy, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic. We have also visited mainland US places that I always dreamed of seeing including New York, San Francisco, Key West, Austin and Dallas. Many of you reading this blog will think, “So what, you visited Dallas?” But think about the number of kids right here in South Carolina that will never leave our state’s borders. Many will never even leave their home county. And that’s sad.

Should You Talk About God?

Day 14- It is early Sunday morning and I write from Charleston while watching “Meet the Press”. I do not have much time to write today, so I want to pose a question to you all.

Under no circumstance do I want to turn this into a political blog. However, I do want to discuss faith and in this instance, the circumstances just happen to be about a political figure.

When first running for Congress, Michelle Bachmann spoke at a mega church stating that she did not want to become a tax attorney, but her husband urged her to and because the Bible says a wife should be submissive to her husband, she did. Congressman Bachmann was asked about the comments during Friday night’s debate and she stated that the word “submissive” is a synonym for “respectful.” Maybe that’s true. Maybe its not. That’s not where I want to go with this.

4 Virtues of a Good Man

Day 13 - It has been another whirlwind weekend. I write from Charleston, SC where I just arrived late last night for the Redstate Gathering and Rick Perry’s announcement for President of the United States, after driving six hours from Martinsville, VA

Upon arriving in Charleston, I hit downtown with my buddy Patrick, enjoying a few beers at Pearlz, Tommy Condon’s and Social. We hooked up with some national political buddies, showing them the charm of the nation’s best city.

The drive to Charleston gave me an opportunity to reexamine C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity. I regularly enjoy books on tape as they seem to help the time pass by much faster than music while driving long distances.

Never Wear Wrinkled Dress Clothes

Day 12 - It will be a long few days on the road. Today I’m in Martinsville, VA for Daddy Bill’s funeral. Shortly I’ll be driving the six hours to Charleston for this weekend’s Redstate Gathering where Governor Rick Perry will be announcing for President of the United States. Both the funeral and the political events will require dress shirts and coats.

This always gives gentlemen a predicament. Most of us hate carrying more than one bag. We certainly do not want to carry irons. So what do we do? I found these two great videos online.
